New Digital Noisy Nights – Call for Young Composers

Grid of musicians for Digital Noisy Nights
Following a successful first online edition, we are excited to announce a second round of new music concerts that you can enjoy from your own home. Are you a young composer looking for a challenge?

Digital Noisy Nights provide an outlet to hear emerging new musical ideas and voices in our new social distanced reality. Every Friday at 3PM for the month of June, these five outstanding Red Note musicians will bring you the best examples of brand new music played from scratch from their homes to yours:

  • Ruth Morley – Flute,
  • Jo Nicholson – Bass Clarinet,
  • Tom Hunter – Percussion,
  • Jackie Shave – Violin,
  • and Duncan Strachan – Cello.

Call for Young Composers

If you are a young composer, still at high school full time and interested in writing a 2 – 5min long piece for a solo instrument, send your name, high school and contact email to admin [at] rednoteensemble.com by Wednesday 27th May (12:00PM).

That same day we will get back in touch to inform you about the instrument you have been assigned to write for (no choice – that’s part of the challenge!). You will also receive the link to a brief instrument demo filmed by each player outlining capabilities, techniques, notation, etc.

Then the challenge is on! You have 3 weeks to write your piece for that specific instrument (if you’re in touch with your school music teacher online, you can ask them for advice and help).  Please submit in pdf format by 5pm on Wednesday 17th June to admin [at] rednoteensemble.com. Please note the scores should not include electronics or any pre-recorded parts, and consider that concerts are rehearsed and performed in a short timeframe.

Our players will then select 5 compositions from those submitted, to be performed on our YouTube channel on our final Digital Noisy Nights concert, 26th June.

Challenge accepted?

Please help us spread the word by sharing this call with your friends and contacts.

We are looking forward to keeping music alive and new music lovers connected online.
