About Us

Red Note makes space for new music to be created, experienced and shared.

Since 2008, we’ve brought artists, audiences and communities together to explore what new music can be and who it can be for. Through adventurous performance, commissioning and collaboration, we take new music into concert halls and unexpected places across Scotland and beyond.

At the heart of Red Note is our ensemble of professional musicians, working with composers and creative partners to bring new ideas to life.

Our work connects three strands:

Performance & Commissioning
We perform and commission adventurous new music, working with composers to develop new work and find fresh ways for audiences to experience it.

Developing Talent
We create opportunities for emerging composers and performers to experiment, collaborate and develop their practice, helping nurture the next generation of musical voices.

Working with Communities
We work with people and communities to make music together, explore new ideas and create meaningful opportunities for participation, connection and creative expression.

We believe new music can open up new ways of listening, thinking and connecting. But opportunities to experience and create it are not equally available to everyone. We’re committed to making our work more accessible and inclusive, reducing barriers to participation and making space for a wider range of voices, experiences and perspectives.

Driven by curiosity and a willingness to take risks, we work with care, adventure and excellence. We bring people, music and places together, creating the conditions for unexpected things to happen. We believe music is shaped by the world around it. Through our work with artists, partners and communities, we explore the connections between music, place, people and the environment, while working to reduce our own environmental impact.

Our ambition is to keep making space for new ideas, new voices and new ways of experiencing music, contributing to a diverse, dynamic and inclusive musical culture in Scotland and beyond.
