SUMMARY:Development opportunity for Scotland-based composers
DESCRIPTION:The new works will be performed during soundfestival 2023. \nThis development opportunity for Scotland-based composers is part of the soundcreators programme\, which focuses on nurturing creative talent.\nsoundcreators is funded by PRS for Music Foundation\, Creative Scotland\, Fenton Arts Trust\, Hugh Fraser Foundation\, William Syson Foundation and Aberdeen City Council. \nThis opportunity is organised in partnership with sound. sound is a new music incubator based in North East Scotland\, initially set up to give local audiences access to new music. It is now renowned in and beyond Scotland for producing and promoting high-quality work\, for its support to composers of all generations and for attracting new audiences through its varied programming and inclusive nature. \n  \nDraft schedule:\nSession 1: Introduction to trumpet and guitar\, Monday 10th July \nWhere: Zoom\nThis first session will primarily be an introduction to writing for trumpet and guitar and will be led by both musicians and Karen Power. \nSession 2: 11th and/or 14th August\nWhere: Zoom\n1-to-1 mentoring sessions with Karen Power and/or musicians. The composers will submit short (approximately 30 second sketches) in advance.\nFollowing this\, the composers will work up full pieces for the third session. \nSession 3: Saturday 9th September\nWhere: tbc (Central Belt)\nThe composers will work alongside two musicians to develop new works. It is expected that composers will bring work in progress with them. The session will last a whole day.\nThe composers will then have until mid-October to make any last adjustments. \nRehearsal: Sunday 8th October\nWhere: tbc (Central Belt)\nHalf-day rehearsal of finished pieces with the composers in attendance. \nPerformance: Thursday 26th October\nWhere: Aberdeen\nA performance of the new works as part of the 2023 soundfestival. There will also be a rehearsal prior to the performance. \n  \nCandidates \nThe five successful candidates will be talented composers resident in Scotland. They can be at any stage in their career\, however they should be able to demonstrate a number of years of compositional experience\, and must be able to articulate their development needs and how the opportunity would benefit them. \nPlease note that we are committed to working with and supporting composers from under-represented groups. Female\, trans\, gender-diverse and ethnic minority composers as well as composers with a disability are encouraged to apply. \nFinancial support for the opportunity is limited to related expenses for travel/accommodation. There will also be a stipend of £200 per composer for a delivered piece to be performed at soundfestival. \n  \nHow to apply \nTo apply for the opportunity please complete this Google form: https://forms.gle/JfYDDwugMPJV6Kfs6\n \nIf further information is required\, please contact Kadri Soerunurk on admin@sound-scotland.co.uk. \nDeadline for applications: Friday 16th June 2023\nWe are offering a 2-day “grace period” until end of day on Monday 19th June at 11am for applicants who can’t reach the deadline due to health\, having to care for family members and other reasonable and/or unexpected circumstances. Please state your reason in the application form.\nWe will inform you whether you are successful or not by the 30th June 2023. \n  \nSelection process \nAs mentioned above sound is committed to working with and supporting composers from under-represented sections of the population. To enable this\, there is a two-stage application process: an initial selection is made\, and then this is narrowed down in a second stage selection process. If you are a female or gender-minority composer\, disabled\, from an ethnic minority and/or from a low-income background\, you can choose to self-select to be put forward automatically to the second round. The selection panel will be made up of the composer mentor\, a representative of sound and of Red Note. \n  \nNotes to composers applying \nSelection for new music opportunities is inherently subjective and the criteria used can differ from project to project. We are frequently over-subscribed and often the quality of applications is extremely high from a wide range of composers\, which usually means making difficult decisions. \nReasons for selecting one composer over another are not always to do with skill level or experience. We may\, for example\, be looking for the right fit for us as an organisation at a particular point in time e.g.\, we may be looking to develop specific strands or activity or genres of music.\n \nFor development opportunities that happen in a group setting\, it may be that we need to take into consideration the coherence of that group e.g.\, we may prefer to have composers of a similar experience-level. We thus sometimes end up turning down composers with more experience or skills\, or giving opportunities to composers who we feel would benefit most from a particular opportunity at that stage in their career\, and faced with difficult choices we may sometimes turn down composers who may have already benefitted from a number of opportunities in the past. \nWe would however encourage composers to apply for any opportunities that interest them and for which they fit the specification\, and not be discouraged if they are not selected for a particular opportunity\, as it does not mean that they are not “good” enough. Please do continue to apply for any opportunity that interests you! \n

SUMMARY:Red Note at hcmf// 2022
DESCRIPTION:Úna Monaghan is a harper\, composer\, researcher and sound artist from Belfast\, working with experimental and improvised sound\, and with live electronics\, from a traditional Irish music background. Her recent work has combined traditional music with bronze sculpture\, sound art and movement sensors. She has been commissioned by hcmf// and Red Note Ensemble to create a new piece\, Notwithstanding\, that will be premiered at hcmf// 2022. It is for solo harp\, electronics and ensemble. \nIn Ann Cleare’s Dysmorphia II\, the three instruments adopt warped versions of each other as if they are different sides of the same brain\, looking at and interpreting the same world but unable to form a consensus on their vision of it. This is an obsessive\, distorted world in which every compositional parameter is saturated in the idea of dysmorphia – timbral\, harmonic\, formal\, rhythmic\, and dynamic dysmorphia with each parameter frantically searching for the difference between reality and perception. \nNick Roth’s Flocking III\, meanwhile\, explores the mechanisms of an emergent system in which individual components can be perceived to express themselves as a group. Nature offers many spectacular examples of this type of behaviour\, of which perhaps the most beautiful is the flocking of birds in flight. \n  \nÚna Monaghan Notwithstanding (World Premiere)*\nAnn Cleare Dysmorphia II (World Premiere of trio edition)\nNick Roth Flocking III (UK Premiere) \nRed Note Ensemble\nRuth Morley\, flute / piccolo\nWill White\, clarinet / bass clarinet\nJackie Shave\, violin\nTom Hankey\, viola\nRobert Irvine\, cello\nIain Crawford\, double bass\nTom Hunter\, percussion \nÚna Monaghan harp \nNick Roth soprano / tenor saxophones \nGeoffrey Paterson conductor \n*co-commissioned by hcmf// & Red Note Ensemble \n

SUMMARY:Human Threads: Red Note with Artlink - CLOSING EVENT
DESCRIPTION:Working to a soundscape specially created for the event by Martina Corsini and commissioned by Red Note Ensemble\, Red Note’s musicians will move freely throughout the space and will invite the audience to experience the music and arts from a different perspective. Open to all. \nThis event is informed by the interests and insights of individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities who have collaborated with Red Note over a number of years. \nPlease note\, this performance will be filmed.  \nFree – Drop-in – no ticket required \nRed Note Ensemble \nRuth Morley\, Flute\nAlex South\, Clarinet \nJessica Beeston\, Viola\nRobert Irvine\, Cello \nMore about the exhibition\nConceived as an accessible\, creative experience informed by individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD)\, the exhibition takes the form of an interactive landscape which invites audiences on a journey of light\, sound\, touch and smell. From a huge silk sail which sways softly\, to sculpture that translates audio into vibrating pulses\, and a playful tower emitting light\, smoke and bubbles – each artwork within this gentle fairground offers a new encounter. \nHuman Threads is the culmination of years of pioneering research by Artlink and the Cherry Road Learning Centre. Through a process of mutual learning via collaborative play. Each artwork has been developed with and informed by individuals with PMLD and invites audiences to interact through a variety of senses. The works expand our perceptions of what an artwork might be and break down barriers of access to contemporary art. Throughout Human Threads the physical experience of the artwork becomes a shared\, communal language through which to explore new possibilities of human perception.  \nIf you require additional info on access to this event please contact Artlink directly.

There will also be a small commission fee of £200 per composer for a delivered piece to be performed at soundfestival. \n  \nHow to apply \nTo apply for the opportunity please complete this Google form. \nDeadline for applications: 15th July 2022 \nIf further information is required\, please contact Elza (info@sound-scotland.co.uk). \nWe will inform you whether you are successful or not by the 22nd July 2022. \n  \nSelection process \nAs mentioned above sound is committed to working with and supporting composers from under-represented sections of the population. To enable this\, there is a two-stage application process: an initial selection is made\, and then this is narrowed down in a second stage selection process. If you are a female\, disabled and/or BAME composer\, you can self-select to be put forward automatically to the second round if you want. The selection panel will be made up of the composer mentor\, a representative of sound (either a staff member or the Chair) and of Red Note. We may\, for example\, be looking for the right fit for us as an organisation at a particular point in time e.g.\, we may be looking to develop specific strands or activity or genres of music. \nFor development opportunities that happen in a group setting\, it may be that we need to take into consideration the coherence of that group e.g.\, we may prefer to have composers of a similar experience-level. \n

SUMMARY:Human Threads: Red Note with Artlink
DESCRIPTION:Reacting spontaneously to the exhibition and audience\, Red Note’s musicians will move freely throughout the space and will invite the audience to experience the music and arts from a different perspective. On Saturday 9th July\, Red Note Ensemble will perform with Indepen-dance dancers. Open to all. \nThis event is informed by the interests and insights of individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities who have collaborated with Red Note over a number of years. \nFree – Drop-in – no ticket required \nWhen? \nSaturday 28th May – 13:00\nSaturday 9th July – 20:00\nSunday 28th August – 14:00 – CLOSING EVENT \nRed Note Ensemble – Saturday 28th May\nRuth Morley\, Flute\nRobert Irvine\, Cello \nRed Note Ensemble – Saturday 9th July\nMark O’Keeffe\, Trumpet\nJessica Beeston\, Viola \nMore about the exhibition\nConceived as an accessible\, creative experience informed by individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD)\, the exhibition takes the form of an interactive landscape which invites audiences on a journey of light\, sound\, touch and smell.

SUMMARY:13 Vices - New Music Biennial
DESCRIPTION:For ensemble\, improvisers\, conductor & voice\, 13 Vices melts boundaries between theatre\, poetry & contemporary music. Exploring the weird\, humorous\, dark & exotic world of contemporary vices\, it is the creation of pioneering compositional voices –  Brian Irvine & Jennifer Walshe. \nFirst performed in 2015\, the seed was planted many years before when Brian chanced upon sculptures by Mihail Chemiakin in Moscow. The collection of slightly grotesque figures\, each representing a particular adult vice that is damaging to children was the springboard to the project\, which would eventually become\, in Brian’s words\, “a wonderfully messy\, chopped up\, beautiful\, bewitching cocktail of the best people making the best sounds and is a project that myself\, collaborator Jennifer (Walshe) and all the gang and very proud of!”. \n13 Vices is truly some of the most imaginative and exhilarating music around and Red Note Ensemble is delighted to perform alongside Paul Dunmall\, Paul Rogers\, & Mark Sanders. This piece that will stick with you.  \nRed Note Ensemble\nJackie Shave\, Violin \nTom Hankey\, Viola\nRobert Irvine\, Cello \nNew Music Biennial is a PRS Foundation and Southbank Centre initiative. \nFor ages 11+ \nImage credit: Moving on Music \n
