SUMMARY:Elbow Room by Thomas Butler
DESCRIPTION:Red Note’s Sound and Music Embedded Composer in Residence\, Thomas Butler‘s new work Elbow Room explores the psychogeography of cites; how we affect the city and how the city affects us. \nThe culmination of an 18 month residency with Red Note\, Elbow Room uses composition\, performance and field recording techniques to tell the story of the mid-twentieth century plan to demolish the city of Glasgow and replace it with a futuristic concrete utopia; an architect’s view of a healthier\, more rational and productive city\, for a healthier\, more rational and productive population. \nMixing period films from the Scottish Screen Archive\, which extol the virtues of the Glasgow of the future\, with new sound recordings made in the city and a virtuosic score featuring violin\, cello\, percussion\, electric guitar\, synthesizer\, clarinet and bass clarinet\, Elbow Room is a nostalgic reflection upon fantasy and reality\, ideal and actuality. \n21 May – Summerhall\, Edinburgh 8pm \n22 May – The Arches\, Glasgow 8pm

SUMMARY:Enough Already
DESCRIPTION:LOD|muziektheater / Red Note Ensemble / François Sarhan\nFrançois Sarhan’s Enough Already is a concert\, a film and a play rolled into one\, about how irresistible — and impossible — it is to achieve utopia.\n\n\nEnough Already is centred around two characters — Professor Glaçon\, author of an imaginary encyclopaedia full of wonderful\, absurd\, funny and uncreatable things — and Bobok\, a fanatical\, naive man who wanders around with the same encyclopaedia under his arm. Bobok desperately wants the wonderful things in Professor Glaçon’s book to be true\, against all the evidence that they can’t be — and he is prepared to go to almost any lengths to make them happen.\n\nWe follow Bobok’s journey as it begins on stage\, and then becomes a silent film with live music and live sound effects. On-stage sound artists provide the accompanying slamming doors\, footsteps and lorries passing by\, and the musicians of Red Note Ensemble accompany Bobok by singing and narrating live at the same time as playing their instruments.\n\n\n\n\nThe five musicians from Red Note Ensemble – previously seen at Tramway in David Shrigley’s Pass the Spoon – play a strange assortment of musical instruments including a tubax (which is a sort of ultra-bass saxophone)\, a Stroh violin (a violin with a gramophone horn attached)\, and an electronically-controlled church pipe organ.\n\nMore than a story\, Enough Already is an all-embracing theatrical\, musical and filmic experience. Come and let yourself be carried along in Bobok’s absurd\, upside-down and hugely entertaining world!\n\n\nThis is the world premiere; the show will tour Europe in 2014.\n \nEnough Already is a co-production between LOD|muziektheater (Belgium) and Red Note Ensemble (Scotland).

SUMMARY:The Intoxicating Rose Garden
DESCRIPTION:Music: Sally Beamish and Anoosh Jahanshahi\nText: Divan e Hafez trans. Jila Peacock \nChoreographer\, dancer\, singer: Michael Popper \nArtwork: Jila Peacock \nVideo: Laurie Irvine \nThe Intoxicating Rose Garden is a new hybrid work which takes Sally Beamish’s settings of poems by Hafez\, the 14th century Persian mystic\, as its starting-point. Combining music\, song\, dance and animated image\, it explores the longing and separation\, as well as the sense of belonging and completeness that are so present in Hafez’s poems: elements that somehow conflict with and complement one another in the same moment. The animated images are based on Jila Peacock’s renderings of Hafez poetry in figural calligraphy. \nRed Note will be joined by the multi-faceted singer and dancer/choreographer\, Michael Popper\, and the outstanding young Iranian setar player Anoosh Jahanshahi\, who will perform his own Songs from Hafez in traditional Persian classical style. \n\n>> SPECIAL FAMILY CONCERT AND WORKSHOP Woodend Barn 10:30am 17 November: Red Note and Michael Popper will introduce and perform parts of The Intoxicating Rose Garden for younger audiences. Expect animals\, fish and birds\, playing\, singing and dancing! \n\n>> The Tolbooth Stirling 8pm 15 November \nINFORMATION AND BOOKING \n>> Woodend Barn Banchory 8pm 17 November \n(with special Family Concert at10:30am) \nINFORMATION AND BOOKING \n>> Traverse Theatre\, Edinburgh 7:30pm 22 November \nINFORMATION AND BOOKING

SUMMARY:Think You Know the Magic Flute? Think Again...
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Richard Williams\, Mozart’s iconic music is a new adaptation for chamber ensemble and Festival Artistic Director Joanna MacGregor’s farewell performance. In the immediate vibrancy of Bath premiere venue Komedia\, The Magic Flute recaptures the excitement and popularity of Mozart’s first performance in Vienna’s small Freihaus Theatre in 1791. \nSet in a mythical\, modern city and in a super-skyscraper\, Red Note Ensemble perform with a cast of young international opera singers. The once famous but now reclusive star\, The Queen of the Night\, has taken refuge. Tamino\, the young reporter is out to get a scoop; has Pamina been kidnapped by her father\, the multi-media mogul Sarastro\, and why are there trials of fire and water for Tamino and Pamina? \nOriginally arranged for an orchestra hidden in the pit\, this chamber arrangement brings the virtuosity of Red Note’s nine brilliant players\, right to the front of the stage. Apart from woodwind and strings\, you’ll hear Mozart’s gorgeous music played by a sensational accordionist\, capturing Wolfgang’s superb populist spirit\, and Joanna MacGregor directs from a magic keyboard too! \nJohn Harris\, Director of Red Note\, says\, “This is going to be a lot of fun for us at Red Note. We love Joanna MacGregor\, we love her virtuosity\, we love the way she thinks about music and makes new things happen\, and we’re incredibly excited to see how she and her team re-make Mozart’s wonderful opera for the 21st Century” \nThe setting moves from the dark lair of Queen of the Night\, to Sarastro’s contemporary penthouse hideaway. The set spills out from the stage to the auditorium\, as does the action in places\, and a silver tree in the audience provides the clues to Tamino and Pamina’s last trial. \nThis is Mozart at its very best – sparkling\, witty\, and faithful to the original. Performed in English\, this fast-moving\, modern dress production has been acclaimed for its clarity\, wit and touching sensibility. Highly recommended for all ages\, this is true family entertainment with a faultless pedigree\, and a delight for both newcomers and opera fans.

The stipulations for commissions this time round are that the music has to be in 4/4\, should ideally be played to a backing track\, and has to be for violin\, cello and accordion. SUMMARY:Brian Eno: MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Red Note with the Bang on a Can All-Stars \nBang on a Can is a major force in the presentation of new concert music\, and has presented hundreds of musical events worldwide. It is best known for its marathon music events during which an eclectic mix of pieces are performed in succession over the course of many hours while audience members\, who are encouraged to maintain a “jeans-and-t-shirt informality\,” are welcome to come and go as they please. For the twentieth anniversary of their Marathon Concerts\, Bang on a Can presented twenty- six hours of uninterrupted music at the World Financial Center Winter Garden Atrium in New York City. \nMusic for Airports was designed to be continuously looped as a sound installation\, with the intent to defuse the tense\, anxious atmosphere of an airport terminal and has enchanted audiences and musicians since its release in 1978. Eno conceived this idea while being stuck at Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany in the mid 70s when he had to spend several hours there and was extremely annoyed by the uninspired sound atmosphere. The Bang on a Can composers made their own arrangement of it for live performance – come chill out in style. \n  \nwww.glasgowconcerthalls.com \n
