SUMMARY:Lâchez Tout! (Enough Already) – Orleans\, France
DESCRIPTION:François Sarhan\, composer in residence at the National Theatre in Orleans between 2009 and 2012 is simultaneously a cellist\, composer\, author\, encyclopaedist\, and a creator of stop motion animation and film. Lachez Tout is a concert and silent film with live music\, actors and two foley (film sound-effect) artists\, with François Sarhan himself performing on stage. Circassian actor Claudio Stellato plays Bobok\, the central character of the film\, and the Foley Artists create the sounds of the doors slamming\, the footsteps and the passing trucks. Lachez Tout is a total experience halfway between a detective story and a philosophical tragicomedy. \nThis production was originally premiered at the Tramway in Glasgow\, and subsequently performed at Summerhall in Edinburgh and at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2013. \n“Enough Already plays serious games with what we know\, or think we know\, exists” (**** Herald) \nRed Note Ensemble Performers:\nViolin Jackie Shave\nSaxophone Gareth Brady\nGuitar Malcolm MacFarlane\nPercussion Tom Hunter\nSynthesizer Simon Smith\nFoley Artists Julien Baissat\, Celine Bernard \n  \nEvent Page \n  \n

SUMMARY:Noisy Nights - Call for Scores
DESCRIPTION:5 selected participants will be required to bring to the course a new work (8 – 10 minutes in duration) for string quartet (2Vn\, Va\, Vc) which will be workshopped\, rehearsed and revised with the players over the period 14th – 16th November. \nParticipants will be selected from an open call. Please apply by email to john (at) rednoteensemble.com with: \n* 2 examples of recent work (pdf only\, no sound files)\n* a short (1/2 page) biography\n* a short (100 word) statement explaining why you want to write a new 10 minute work for string quartet \nby 5pm on 6th October at the latest. Participants will be notified by 15th October and will then be expected to write the first draft of the new work over the following month. \nThis opportunity is particularly offered to participants who wish to develop their practice as composers\, and priority will be given to those applicants who demonstrate that they will make use of the course in this way. We expect the work to be written to be a new one\, not a re-presentation of a previous piece. \nPlease note that\, whilst the course is free to participants\, Red Note cannot offer financial assistance with travel\, accommodation or other attendance costs\, and participants must be available for the whole time of the course. Participants will also be expected to revise their works during the course as necessary; office facilities on-site including a printer will be provided for this.

SUMMARY:Sounding Brass
DESCRIPTION:The site of Prestongrange’s museum has a fascinating industrial history going back to the 16th Century including glass\, pottery and brick manufacture as well as mining. The impressive\, high-roofed Power House is perfect for this exciting programme of music for brass. The Red Note Ensemble contrast sonorous pieces from the Renaissance with the amazing\, spatial effects of contemporary music by composers such as Harvey and Birtwistle. The overwhelming\, surround-sound beauty of Jonathan Harvey’s Ricercare played by trumpet virtuoso Mark O’Keeffe makes a fitting climax to a very special event. \n“O’Keeffe’s playing was undemonstratively sensational. A stupendous performance” – The Herald

SUMMARY:Elbow Room by Thomas Butler
DESCRIPTION:Red Note’s Sound and Music Embedded Composer in Residence\, Thomas Butler‘s new work Elbow Room explores the psychogeography of cites; how we affect the city and how the city affects us. \nThe culmination of an 18 month residency with Red Note\, Elbow Room uses composition\, performance and field recording techniques to tell the story of the mid-twentieth century plan to demolish the city of Glasgow and replace it with a futuristic concrete utopia; an architect’s view of a healthier\, more rational and productive city\, for a healthier\, more rational and productive population. \nMixing period films from the Scottish Screen Archive\, which extol the virtues of the Glasgow of the future\, with new sound recordings made in the city and a virtuosic score featuring violin\, cello\, percussion\, electric guitar\, synthesizer\, clarinet and bass clarinet\, Elbow Room is a nostalgic reflection upon fantasy and reality\, ideal and actuality. \n21 May – Summerhall\, Edinburgh 8pm \n22 May – The Arches\, Glasgow 8pm

SUMMARY:Enough Already
DESCRIPTION:François Sarhan/Red Note Ensemble/LOD Music Theatre\n“Enough Already”  (French title “Lâchez Tout”) is a major new music-theatre performance created by French composer-artist François Sarhan\, featuring actor Claudio Stellato\, five musicians from Red Note Ensemble\, two live sound effect artists\, extensive stop-frame animation\, and film. “Enough Already” is a secular parable in which meanings and relations between people\, objects and events become increasingly absurd and ambiguous as time goes on. \nThe 5 musicians from Red Note Ensemble – previously seen at Summerhall with “The End of the World Show” – virtuosically sing\, narrate and play a strange assortment of musical instruments including a tubax\, a Stroh violin\, and the mysterious Sixxen … \n“Enough Already” is a co-production between LOD|muziektheater (Belgium) and Red Note Ensemble (Scotland).

SUMMARY:Enough Already
DESCRIPTION:LOD|muziektheater / Red Note Ensemble / François Sarhan\nFrançois Sarhan’s Enough Already is a concert\, a film and a play rolled into one\, about how irresistible — and impossible — it is to achieve utopia.\n\n\nEnough Already is centred around two characters — Professor Glaçon\, author of an imaginary encyclopaedia full of wonderful\, absurd\, funny and uncreatable things — and Bobok\, a fanatical\, naive man who wanders around with the same encyclopaedia under his arm. Bobok desperately wants the wonderful things in Professor Glaçon’s book to be true\, against all the evidence that they can’t be — and he is prepared to go to almost any lengths to make them happen.\n\nWe follow Bobok’s journey as it begins on stage\, and then becomes a silent film with live music and live sound effects. On-stage sound artists provide the accompanying slamming doors\, footsteps and lorries passing by\, and the musicians of Red Note Ensemble accompany Bobok by singing and narrating live at the same time as playing their instruments.\n\n\n\n\nThe five musicians from Red Note Ensemble – previously seen at Tramway in David Shrigley’s Pass the Spoon – play a strange assortment of musical instruments including a tubax (which is a sort of ultra-bass saxophone)\, a Stroh violin (a violin with a gramophone horn attached)\, and an electronically-controlled church pipe organ.\n\nMore than a story\, Enough Already is an all-embracing theatrical\, musical and filmic experience. Come and let yourself be carried along in Bobok’s absurd\, upside-down and hugely entertaining world!\n\n\nThis is the world premiere; the show will tour Europe in 2014.\n \nEnough Already is a co-production between LOD|muziektheater (Belgium) and Red Note Ensemble (Scotland).
