SUMMARY:World Premiere The 306: Day
DESCRIPTION:The 306: Day\, the second part in Oliver Emmanuel and Gareth Williams’ powerful new First World War trilogy\, is set to embark on an expansive Scottish tour between 5 May and 3 June 2017. The show\, which explores how the conflict affected women\, families\, and communities on the home front\, will open at Perth’s historic Station Hotel on 5 May before setting off on a Scottish tour. It will visit venues\, town and village halls\, and civic spaces across the country\, including performances in Glasgow\, Clydebank\, Aberdeen\, Dundee\, Lockerbie\, Galashiels\, Ballachulish\, Wigtown\, Cove\, Nairn\, Arrochar\, and Fort Augustus. \nThe first part of the trilogy\, The 306: Dawn\, premiered in the summer of 2016 and marked the centenary of the Somme Offensive. Audaciously staged within a barn in the Perthshire countryside\, \nInspired by real events and first-hand accounts\, The 306: Day will tell the stories of three women left behind in the wake of the executions\, and their struggles to be heard above the clamour of the conflict. The year is 1917\, and the war across the channel rages on. In Russia\, a revolution is turning the social order on its head while at home in Britain\, there are women fighting their own battles. Rents are rising. Food is scarce. And war work can be deadly. \nThe show features a contemporary score performed live by leading members of the Red Note Ensemble\, who also contributed a deft and moving accompaniment to last year’s The 306: Dawn. Composer Gareth Williams is a long-term collaborator with both Red Note and Oliver Emanuel; the pair previously worked on The End of the World (for One Night Only) which Red Note commissioned\, developed and staged in Edinburgh in December 2012. The National Theatre of Scotland also reunites with Perth Theatre and collaborates with Stellar Quines for the first time\, under the new Artistic Directorship of Jemima Levick. \nThe 306: Day is co-commissioned with 14-18 NOW\, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary. Support for the tour comes from The Gannochy Trust\, The Forteviot Trust\, and The Thomson Charitable Trust.

SUMMARY:Aeolian Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The project draws inspiration and working title from the “breath” of the accordion. Using the accordion and its bellows to power/trigger a series of other instruments/performers to play using breath and air in the manner of an Aeolian (wind) harp. \nFor instance\, the accordionist may trigger a bellows that blows air across the strings of a violin\, or a harp\, as well as performing on his own instrument. The ensemble will consist of 12 players including strings\, harpist\, acoustic guitarist\, percussionists and clarsach. The performance will be as akin to the notion of a kinetic sculpture as to a work for ensemble. 30 mins long\, audience stand around the installation / performance. \nAccordionist Andreas Borregaard\, composer Maja Ratkje and video/sound artist Kathy Hinde will be in Bristol to workshop Aeolian ahead of its World Première in November at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

SUMMARY:New Music Makers Workshops and Performance
DESCRIPTION:What is it? \nNew Music Makers is a school’s composing project that takes place over four sessions\, in partnership with your school’s music department staff and instrument instructors. Whatever the pupils write we take seriously; we don’t require them to produce perfectly notated works right away. Red Note composers and players work alongside staff and pupils to explore and create new music. We work with their initial ideas by interpreting them on the spot. By building a level of trust between the musicians and pupils\, they progress rapidly\, creating fully-formed\, fully-notated\, coherent pieces within three weeks. Watch our short film here. This project has been made possible with thanks to support from The Robertson Trust. \nWho is it for? \nWe usually work with Higher/Advanced Higher pupils (though we are happy to work with Nat 5s). \nThe ability to use notation is useful\, but not essential. Finished scores can be notated\, or graphic\, or written instructions – so long as it’s the pupil’s own ideas\, and they can communicate these clearly using whichever method they choose. Red Note and school staff team will support pupils to be able to communicate their creative ideas to their performers. \nWhat are the results? \nEach pupil involved will create and finish a composition scored for three instruments \nSchools can organise to record the performance for exam purposes \nBy working with two classes\, the project leaves and genuine legacy of school staff who have experienced the process and are thus equipped to re-stage the project ‘in-house’ in the future. \nPupils develop their own creative voice in music composition. \nHow does it work? \nThe project will take place over four double periods plus a final performance at your school. Sessions are usually spread over four weeks (though can be condensed or spread out more if scheduling requires). The performance takes place on the same day as the last session. \nWe work with two classes: \nClass no.1 will be led by the Red Note Ensemble team\, observed by the school music staff and 3 school instrumental instructors. \nClass no.2 will be led by the school music staff and 3 school instrumental instructors\, supported by the Red Note team. \nSession One (single period) \nClass no.1            led by Red Note project leader
(observed by school team). Introductory session: introduces the team(s) and project to pupils\, initial chat about instruments. Classes could be combined for this one session; in which case Red Note leader would lead\, with contributions from school team. \nClass no.2            led by school team
(supported by Red Note)     \nSession Two (double period) \nClass no.1            led by Red Note project leader + 3 Red Note musicians
(observed by school team + 3 school music instructors). Instrument demos\, and the ‘Ten minute composing challenge’ \nClass no.2            led by school team + 3 school music instructors
(supported by Red Note)            \nSession Three (double period) \nClass no.1            led by Red Note project leader
(observed by school team). ‘Work in progress’ session – help with developing creative ideas\, piece structure\, getting ideas down on paper. Lots of one-to-one support \nClass no.2            led by school team
(supported by Red Note)     \nSession Four (double period) and PERFORMANCE \nClass no.1            led by Red Note project leader + 3 Red Note musicians
(observed by school team + 3 school music instructors). Rehearse pupils’ pieces. Final play-through/snagging/finishing touches of all compositions                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 \nClass no.2            led by school team + 3 school music instructors
(supported by Red Note)            \nPERFORMANCE                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       \nClass no.2            led by school team + 3 school music instructors
(supported by Red Note)            \nIdeally\, each finished composition will be performed at the informal end-of-project performance (friends\, family\, school staff invited). Class no.1’s compositions are performed by Red Note musicians\, Class no.2’s compositions are performed by the school’s 3 instrumental instructors. The project will be taking place in June\, after the exams period. \nAll we need from you: \nSchool music department staff must be present at all sessions and school music instructor team (3 musicians) must be available for sessions 2 and 4 & the performance. Their attendance at sessions 1 & 3 is beneficial and strongly encouraged\, though can be managed without if absolutely necessary. \nGet in touch \nIf you are interested in the project and would like to take part or find out more\, please contact Project Manager\, Siobhan Clark\, by email on newmusicmakers@rednoteensemble.com

SUMMARY:String Quartets by Lyell Cresswell
DESCRIPTION:One of New Zealand’s most distinguished composers\, Cresswell made Edinburgh his home in 1982 and has since become one of the most important figures in the Scottish music scene\, receiving a prestigious Scottish Arts Council ‘Creative Scotland Award’ in 2001. His output comprises works for orchestra\, chamber ensembles\, choir\, voice and solo instruments. Despite a discography that covers much of his music for orchestra\, his string quartets remain as yet unrepresented on disc. \nThis recording will add these important works to the recorded catalogue\, creating a new international platform for Cresswell’s music while making a significant contribution to the recorded repertoire of one of Scotland’s most eminent composers. \n

SUMMARY:The Night With… Red Note
DESCRIPTION:Programmed by composer Matthew Whiteside\, The Night With… is a new series of salon style concerts presenting classical and new music in an informal environment. \n‘I want people to experience and enjoy all music as music rather than have a separate series for new and old. In these concerts I’ve programmed a mix that will be in three short 15 to 30 minute sections giving the audience a chance to chat to the players\, each other and any of the composers that are there. I want to develop this as a monthly series across the main cities in Scotland and commission new works’. \nThe series is kindly supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland’s Open Project Fund.

SUMMARY:Parlour Sounds by Patricia Alessandrini
DESCRIPTION:Parlour Sounds is a multimedia project involving kitchen devices\, and housekeeping aids in a subversive\, experimental electronic aesthetic. Coming out of Patricia Alessandrini’s Sound and Music Embedded residency with Red Note Ensemble\, in partnership with the Conservatoire de Paris\, it will also feature work by composers associated with the Conservatoire. \nIncorporating live electronics\, video and theatrical elements\, Parlour Sounds will involve vocal elements and text performed by soprano and the musicians\, in relation to their instruments (singing into the flute\, transducing sound from the voice into instruments\, etc). The project also uses interactive technology to transform ordinary household objects into electronic instruments. \nParlour Sounds is a female/feminist view of technology: set in a British home in the late 60’s\, and sees the soprano interact with the technology she finds at home as well as audio technology designed for the home in a subversive\, ‘circuit bending’ aesthetic. \nThe ticket price also includes food/dinner. Please arrive at 7pm. In partnership with sound\, NEAT\, Buchanan Food & the Barn \nFor more information on Patricia please visit: patriciaalessandrini.com

SUMMARY:Red Note seeks Board members
DESCRIPTION:Red Note Ensemble is Scotland’s contemporary music ensemble\, performing throughout Scotland and internationally. Building on its continued success and expansion\, we are looking for two new Board members. We invite applications from suitably experienced individuals and would particularly welcome those with expertise in social inclusion and (due to one of our long-standing original Board members now standing down) in finance. \nForward-thinking and dynamic\, the company plays a leadership role nationally and internationally in the development of new music and the engagement of new audiences through its busy annual schedule of events\, many of them cross-artform. Our current Board members have expertise and experience at a senior level in marketing\, education\, law and arts management and are enthusiastic supporters of Red Note’s ethos of artistic excellence available to all. \nBoard meetings are held quarterly\, in Glasgow or Edinburgh. SUMMARY:UK Premiere of KEIN at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:Composer\, writer and visual artist François Sarhan has designed and made a set of new\, invented stringed instruments for the performers of Red Note to play on. Integrating recorded texts from historical figures\, this new work explores the relationship between voice and instrument. \nBy reconsidering the string instrument\, Francois will create around eight new musical devices\, keeping only the resonating string in each. Some will be based on traditional string instruments\, adapted with strange bodies and horns\, and some will not be like anything you might come across in a concert hall! \nThe new instruments will explore the role and attitude of the player\, giving him or her a much riskier\, fragile and touching task as a performer; to consider the notion of performance; what it means\, how to communicate\, express themselves and share the music with an audience. \nHow the instruments work\, look and sound is entirely up to François; the performers of Red Note will be working closely with François for the UK Premiere at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival on 23rd November. \nFrançois has an utterly unique and distinctive voice and this project promises to be one of the most innovative and exciting works to be created this year. \nFor more information on HCMF visit www.hcmf.co.uk

SUMMARY:Ring Time Music and Movement Workshops for Dalcroze UK Centenary
DESCRIPTION:As part of the centenary celebrations for Dalcroze UK\, Sally Beamish has been commissioned to write a 10-minute piece for three instruments (high/medium/low) for plastique animée (PA). PA is a realisation of music in movement\, aiming to make the music visible where dancers are trained to create a counterpoint with any music they may use\, rather than move exactly with it. \nMusic and movement share many characteristics. This creative workshop gives dancers and musicians the opportunity to work together and learn from one another. All participants should come in clothes they can move in\, and musicians are invited to bring instruments. \nThe workshops will be led by two performers involved in the première of Ring Time\, with Monica Wilkinson\, Dalcroze consultant\, musician and teacher. SUMMARY:Ring Time at Drygate Brewery\, Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:As part of the centenary celebrations for Dalcroze UK\, Sally Beamish has been commissioned to write a 10-minute piece for three instruments (high/medium/low) for performance and workshop using the plastique animée (PA) technique\, pioneered by the Dalcroze school. \nPA is a realisation of music in movement\, aiming to make the music visible and enabling viewers and participants to hear and understand the music more clearly. Generally speaking\, contemporary dance training encourages dancers to create a counterpoint with any music rather than to express the same thing. Music and movement share three key elements: time\, space and energy. “Ring Time” has been designed to highlight this and to raise the profile of Dalcroze in the UK and beyond. \nFor more information on Dalcroze UK visit Dalcroze UK \nFor more information on Ring Time visit https://vimeo.com/185805038

SUMMARY:Music and Film at Concorde
DESCRIPTION:The Concorde Hangar is the stunning setting for a concert in which visual images join music to spectacular effect. \nEdgard Varèse’s Déserts (1954) is a monumental work which explores the inner deserts of the mind as well as of land and sea. Varèse’s powerful music is accompanied by a film specially created by the visionary American video artist Bill Viola. George Crumb’s mesmerizingly beautiful and ritualistic Vox Balaenae\, inspired by the singing of humpback whales\, is followed by Louis Andriessen’s hypnotic\, super-dynamic Workers’ Union\, with a brand new film commissioned from sound artist Zoe Irvine. \nIn this exciting event Red Note Advanced Academy brings senior students from major European conservatoires\, including Paris\, to work alongside Red Note musicians. \nProgramme:\nVarèse           Déserts\nCrumb           Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale)\nAndriessen   Workers Union \n

SUMMARY:Lammermuir Festival Project
DESCRIPTION:Red Note Ensemble and Red Note Academy players will be giving a masterclasses and side-by-side workshops on Louis Andriessen’s ‘Workers Union’ with pupils from Knox Academy. \nWorkers Union was originally written for the orchestra De Volharding (Perseverance)\, in which Louis figured as a pianist at that time. \nThis piece is a combination of individual freedom and severe discipline: its rhythm is exactly fixed; the pitch\, on the other hand\, is indicated only approximately\, on a single-lined stave.\nIt is difficult to play in an ensemble and to remain in step\, sort of thing like organising and carrying on political action. \nLouis Andriessen Worker’s Union\n(1990) \nOnly for information\, not a public event.

SUMMARY:New Music Makers Project\, Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:Red Note composers and players working alongside staff and pupils from Oakwood Primary School\, Barrhead High School\, Woodfarm High School\, Lochend Community High School and other Glasgow secondary schools to explore and create new music in the classroom. \nTrying to encourage an insecure teen to open up their imagination and let it run wild can be as challenging as trying to herd cats. Not only that but to transform their imagination into a refined\, structured\, musical composition for multiple instruments that satisfies the outcomes and criteria for examination is a task that often fills the poor petrified teen\, and their teacher\, with fear. \nNew Music Makers is designed to inspire and support composing within schools and demonstrates how a professional ensemble working in partnership with a school can create a genuine\, practical legacy\, enabling the school to take the work forward independently. \nFor more information on New Music Makers and to watch four films demonstrating the processes behind the project visit New Music Makers

SUMMARY:‘Aeolian’ Development Residency
DESCRIPTION:The work in progress\, Aeolian\, draws its inspiration and working title from the “breath” of the accordion and will use the accordionist as a central musical and air-producing source. \nThe ensemble is connected to the air-stream provided by the accordionist’s «lungs» and other systems. The piece will be set up as an installation of modified\, conventional and invented instruments\, all acoustic\, which will surround the audience. \nThe ensemble will consist of 12 players including various string\, percussion and wind instruments. The performers’ actions will be initiated by the accordionist\, in ways that are identifiable to the audience\, and will resemble the notion of a kinetic sculpture. \nMusic: Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje\nInstallation: Kathy Hinde\nSoloist: Andreas Borregaard\nCellist: Robert Irvine \nThe artists are developing ideas on a Residency at Scottish Sculpture Workshop\, Lumsden from 14th to 28th August\, 2016 \nOnly for information\, not a public event. \nwww.kathyhinde.co.uk \nwww.ratkje.com \nhttp://andreasborregaard.com
