SUMMARY:Red Note at The Granary part of Lammermuir Festival
DESCRIPTION:Red Note Ensemble and Red Note Advanced Academy inaugurate it with two highly dramatic pieces by one of Britain’s most original composers. \nThe 1928 silent film The Life and Death of 9413 is a pioneering work of avant-garde cinema for which David Sawer has composed a wonderfully atmospheric score. The Lighthouse Keepers is a terrifying story of a keeper and his son trapped in their lighthouse\, portrayed in the manner of a radio play for two actors with highly-coloured and tension-filled music. \nAlso featuring a new work by Thomas Butler (commissioned by Red Note Ensemble). \nPlease note there are two afternoon concerts 2.30pm and 4.15pm lasting approx. 1 hour. \nKindly supported by the French Institute for Scotland.

SUMMARY:Scottish Association for Music Education
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 7th and Friday 8th September\, Red Note Director of Access\, Engagement and Participation\, Louise Martin\, presents New Music Makers at Scottish Association for Music Education. \nLaunched in 2013\, New Music Makers (NMM) supports the development of young composers in schools across Scotland. Designed to inspire and assist composing\, NMM demonstrates how a professional ensemble working in partnership with a school can create a genuine practical legacy\, enabling the school to take the work forward independently. NMM is an external opportunity taken up at the discretion of the school\, however supported by the relevant local authority. Both teachers and pupils have given very positive feedback: \nAli Preston (at time of her involvement with NMM was PT Music at Woodfarm High School; she is now PT Performing Arts at King’s Park Secondary School)\n“I just wanted to thank you and the team so much for the delivery of the composing project over the last month at Woodfarm. The pupils have benefited so much from working with Matt and the musicians. Each one of the team had a fantastic approach towards the young people and really encouraged and motivated them in their compositions. Speaking on behalf of the staff\, we all have learnt so much which we are already carrying forwards as we work with younger pupils in the classes too.” \nAnnon. Barrhead High School (pupils submit feedback anonymously)\n“I really enjoyed taking part with Red Note. And although frustrating at times it was quite fun composing my own music. Interesting. Inspiring. Proud of my piece.”

SUMMARY:Blowing Their Own Horns @ DCA
DESCRIPTION:A longstanding part of the exhibition programme at DCA\, Echo is designed to throw new light on the works displayed in their galleries by inviting other artistic voices into the building to respond to each show. \nAs part of this instalment of Echo\, Red Note bring to life some of the curious instruments from St Cecilia’s Hall\, the home of the University of Edinburgh’s musical instrument museum\, to be played in the company of Clare Woods’ new paintings. \nThis performance\, titled Blowing Their Own Horns\, will include a commission by composer Jim Sutherland\, specifically written to bring these big-personality instruments together. \nIn advance of this performance\, from 19:00-20:00 there will be three further opportunities for other voices to present ideas. In past events\, participants have presented a wide variety of new and existing works that they have made in response to\, or think is relevant to\, the work/themes in the exhibitions. These have previously included drawings\, sculptures\, short films\, poetry\, text readings\, dance\, music\, and performance. If you would like to share your creative response to the work on show\, please submit a short proposal (no more than 300 words) to exhibitions@dca.org.uk by Thursday 27 July. \nSupported by Museums Galleries Scotland Partnership Fund. \nFeaturing Red Note musicians Paul Stone\, Mark O’Keefe\, Andy Saunders and Danielle Price

SUMMARY:New Music Makers at Shawlands Academy
DESCRIPTION:Red Note are working with music teachers and pupils studying Advanced Higher and Higher Music\, before culminating in a performance on 23 June. \nNew Music Makers is an exciting and ambitious programme to support the development of young composers in schools across Scotland. Designed to inspire and support composing\, the project demonstrates how a professional ensemble working in partnership with a school can create a genuine practical legacy\, enabling the school to take the work forward independently. \nThe sessions\, led by Red Note’s John Harris\, will give 20 pupils all studying Music an insight into some of the ideas and compositional techniques used by professional composers. Four workshops\, running from 7 June to 23 June\, culminate in an informal performance on 23 June\, featuring the pupil’s new compositions performed by Red Note musicians David Munn\, Ruth Morley\, Pete Furniss and John Harris. \nIf you would like more information\, or would like your school to participate in New Music Makers\, please contact Project Manager Siobhan Clark at newmusicmakers@rednoteensemble.com \nNew Music Makers is made possible thanks to support from Creative Scotland\, The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation\, The Robertson Trust and The Radcliffe Trust.

SUMMARY:World Premiere The 306: Day
DESCRIPTION:The 306: Day\, the second part in Oliver Emmanuel and Gareth Williams’ powerful new First World War trilogy\, is set to embark on an expansive Scottish tour between 5 May and 3 June 2017. The show\, which explores how the conflict affected women\, families\, and communities on the home front\, will open at Perth’s historic Station Hotel on 5 May before setting off on a Scottish tour. It will visit venues\, town and village halls\, and civic spaces across the country\, including performances in Glasgow\, Clydebank\, Aberdeen\, Dundee\, Lockerbie\, Galashiels\, Ballachulish\, Wigtown\, Cove\, Nairn\, Arrochar\, and Fort Augustus. \nThe first part of the trilogy\, The 306: Dawn\, premiered in the summer of 2016 and marked the centenary of the Somme Offensive. Audaciously staged within a barn in the Perthshire countryside\, \nInspired by real events and first-hand accounts\, The 306: Day will tell the stories of three women left behind in the wake of the executions\, and their struggles to be heard above the clamour of the conflict. The year is 1917\, and the war across the channel rages on. In Russia\, a revolution is turning the social order on its head while at home in Britain\, there are women fighting their own battles. Rents are rising. Food is scarce. And war work can be deadly. \nThe show features a contemporary score performed live by leading members of the Red Note Ensemble\, who also contributed a deft and moving accompaniment to last year’s The 306: Dawn. Composer Gareth Williams is a long-term collaborator with both Red Note and Oliver Emanuel; the pair previously worked on The End of the World (for One Night Only) which Red Note commissioned\, developed and staged in Edinburgh in December 2012. The National Theatre of Scotland also reunites with Perth Theatre and collaborates with Stellar Quines for the first time\, under the new Artistic Directorship of Jemima Levick. \nThe 306: Day is co-commissioned with 14-18 NOW\, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary. Support for the tour comes from The Gannochy Trust\, The Forteviot Trust\, and The Thomson Charitable Trust.

SUMMARY:Aeolian Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The project draws inspiration and working title from the “breath” of the accordion. Using the accordion and its bellows to power/trigger a series of other instruments/performers to play using breath and air in the manner of an Aeolian (wind) harp. \nFor instance\, the accordionist may trigger a bellows that blows air across the strings of a violin\, or a harp\, as well as performing on his own instrument. The ensemble will consist of 12 players including strings\, harpist\, acoustic guitarist\, percussionists and clarsach. The performance will be as akin to the notion of a kinetic sculpture as to a work for ensemble. 30 mins long\, audience stand around the installation / performance. \nAccordionist Andreas Borregaard\, composer Maja Ratkje and video/sound artist Kathy Hinde will be in Bristol to workshop Aeolian ahead of its World Première in November at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
