SUMMARY:Development opportunity for Scotland-based composers
DESCRIPTION:This development opportunity for Scotland-based composers is organised in partnership with us at  Red Note and is part of soundcreators programme\, which focuses on nurturing creative talent. soundcreators is funded by Creative Scotland\, Help Musicians UK and the PRS for Music Foundation as well as by the Foyle Foundation\, the Hugh Fraser Foundation and Aberdeen City Council. \nsound is a new music incubator based in North East Scotland\, initially set up to give local audiences access to new music. It is now renowned in and beyond Scotland for producing and promoting high-quality work\, for its support to composers of all generations and for attracting new audiences through its varied programming and inclusive nature. \nFive composers will have the opportunity to develop works of around 5 minutes for solo flute and electronics working alongside Ruth Morley (flute) from Red Note and composer Alistair MacDonald. The new works will be performed during the 2020 soundfestival. \nDraft schedule \nSession 1: Introduction to flute and electronics  \nDate: 17 August 2020\nWhere: Zoom \nThis first session will primarily be an introduction to writing for flute as well as using electronics\, and will be led by Ruth Morley and Alistair MacDonald. Following this session the composers will be expected to prepare short sketches and ideas for the next session. \nSession 2:  \nDate: 20 August 2020 (afternoon)\nWhere: Zoom \nThe composers will submit short (approximately 30 second) sketches by Wednesday 19 August evening which will be worked with Ruth Morley and Alistair MacDonald during this session. Following this\, the composers will work up full pieces for the third session. \nSession 3:  \nDate: mid-September 2020 (exact date tbc)\nWhere: location tbc \nEach composer’s piece will be played and discussed with Ruth Morley and Alistair MacDonald. The composers will then have until mid-October to make any last adjustments. \nRehearsal:  \nDate: mid-October (exact date tbc)\nWhere: location tbc \nThe pieces will be rehearsed with Ruth Morley with the composers in attendance. \nPerformance: \nDate: end of October (exact date tbc)\nWhere: Aberdeen \nA performance of the new works as part of the 2020 soundfestival. There will also be a rehearsal prior to the performance. \nCandidates \nThe five successful candidates will be talented composers resident in Scotland. They can be at any stage in their career\, however they should be able to demonstrate a number of years of compositional experience\, and must be able to articulate their development needs and how the opportunity would benefit them. Please note that we are committed to working with and supporting composers with additional support needs. Composers from under-represented groups and especially composers with disability are encouraged to apply. \nFinancial support for the opportunity is limited to related expenses for travel/accommodation. There will also be a small commission fee of £200 per composer for a delivered piece to be performed at soundfestival. \nHow to apply  \nTo apply for the opportunity please visit https://sound-scotland.co.uk/news/development-opportunity-for-scotland-based-composers \nDeadline for applications: 3 August 2020 \nIf further information is required please contact admin@sound-scotland.co.uk. \nWe will inform you whether you are successful or not by 7 August 2020. \nSelection process \nAs mentioned above\, sound is committed to working with and supporting composers from under-represented sections of the population. To enable this\, there is a two-stage application process: an initial selection is made\, and then this is narrowed down in a second stage selection process. If you are a female\, disabled and/or BAME composer\, you can self-select to be put forward automatically to the second round if you want. The selection panel will be made up of Ruth Morley\, Alistair MacDonald\, a representative of sound(either a staff member or the Chair) and of Red Note. \nNotes to composers applying \nSelection for new music opportunities is inherently subjective and the criteria used can differ from project to project. We are frequently over-subscribed and often the quality of applications is extremely high from a wide range of composers\, which usually means making difficult decisions.  \nReasons for selecting one composer over another are not always to do with skill level or experience. We may\, for example\, be looking for the right fit for us as an organisation at a particular point in time e.g.\, we may be looking to develop specific strands or activity or genres of music. \nFor development opportunities that happen in a group setting\, it may be that we need to take into consideration the coherence of that group e.g.\, we may prefer to have composers of a similar experience-level. We thus sometimes end up turning down composers with more experience or skills\, or giving opportunities to composers who we feel would benefit most from a particular opportunity at that stage in their career\, and faced with difficult choices we may sometimes turn down composers who may have already benefited from a number of opportunities in the past. \nWe would however encourage composers to apply for any opportunities that interest them and for which they fit the specification\, and not be discouraged if they are not selected for a particular opportunity\, as it does not mean that they are not “good” enough. Please do continue to apply for any opportunity that interests you!

SUMMARY:Red Note seeks a new Chair of the Board of Directors
DESCRIPTION:Red Note Ensemble is Scotland’s contemporary music ensemble\, performing throughout Scotland\, the UK and internationally. Our Chair\, Professor Celia Duffy\, has decided to step down after 10 highly-successful years in the position\, having guided the ensemble from its small beginnings in 2009 to its current status (since 2015) as Creative Scotland Regularly Funded Organisation. \nAlways forward-thinking and dynamic\, the company plays a leadership role nationally and internationally in the development of new music and the engagement of new audiences through its busy\, annual schedule of events\, many of them cross-artform and many of them highly socially-engaged. Our current Board members have expertise and experience at a senior level in marketing\, education\, law\, finances and arts. \nFor this role\, we invite interest from suitably experienced individuals at a Chief Executive level and would particularly welcome those with a background in business and / or experience of a previous board membership and a genuine interest in music and the arts. The ideal candidate would contribute his/her knowledge and strong business contacts and commit to actively support the ensemble by promoting and supporting the organisation externally. \nBoard meetings are held quarterly\, in Glasgow or Edinburgh or\, in the current situation\, in virtual meeting rooms. In addition\, the Chair gives informal advice by phone or 1:1 meetings with the executive team as required and line-manages the CEO. The Chair is furthermore responsible for ensuring the Board works effectively\, leading the Board team and meetings and overseeing decisions taken. \nThis is a voluntary position\, and Board Members are rightly highly valued for the vital role they fulfil in providing professional guidance and governance for our ambitious and rapidly developing company. The Red Note Board\, like the company\, is friendly and informal\, but maintains the highest possible professional standards in its business.  \nBoth informal discussions of the role and formal expressions of interest will be welcomed by former Chair\, Professor Celia Duffy\, who may be contacted via email (ceelsduffy@gmail.com). \nThe deadline for formal expressions of interest is midnight on Friday 30th July 2020

SUMMARY:Red Note Fridays@3: McLeod's A Moment In Time
DESCRIPTION:Join us on our YouTube channel every Friday afternoon at 3PM for a session of new music where we release unseen performances\, delve into our recorded albums and meet the composers.  \nFriday 24 July: We look back to John McLeod’s landmark collection ‘Moments in Time’ recorded during the composer’s eightieth birthday year. The collection brings together McLeod’s four mythological ‘songs’ – powerful dramatic scenes in which instruments are elevated to voice-like expression – and a further work which crystallises the theme of a single moment with a long expressive ‘shadow’. Increasingly acclaimed at home and abroad\, Aberdeen-born John McLeod’s music bears all the hallmarks of exuberant colour and precisely imagined fantasy that his early associations with Lennox Berkeley and Witold Lutosławski would lead one to expect.   \nClick on this link or on BUY TICKETS and you will redirected to YouTube. \nAll events in our Fridays@3 series are offered online for free\, if you are in a position to do so\, we hope you will consider making a donation to Help Musicians’ Coronavirus Financial Hardship Fund Thank you!

SUMMARY:Red Note Fridays@3: Sweeney's Cello Sonata
DESCRIPTION:Join us on our YouTube channel every Friday afternoon at 3PM for a session of new music where we release unseen performances\, delve into our recorded albums and meet the composers.  \nFriday 17 July: We take a closer look at William Sweeney’s award-winning Cello Sonata\, recipient of a 2011 BASCA British Composer Award\, from his Delphian album ‘Tree O’ Licht’. Both musically impassioned and socially engaged\, William Sweeney’s music is at its most eloquent when voiced by that most human of instruments\, the cello. The Sonata bears a joint dedication to Delphian artist Robert Irvine and to Erkki Lahesmaa – ‘keepers’\, as Sweeney calls them\, ‘of the cello’s inner voice’.

SUMMARY:Red Note Fridays@3: Cresswell's String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Join us on our YouTube channel every Friday afternoon at 3PM for a session of new music where we release unseen performances\, delve into our recorded albums and meet the composers.  \nFriday 10 July: We dive into Cresswell’s distinctive sound world in the Delphian album ‘Music for String Quartet’. Two ends of the world are bridged in this compelling survey of string chamber music by Lyell Cresswell\, whose unique body of work has been a vital presence in his adopted home of Scotland for four decades now while retaining qualities of light\, space and openness that evoke his native New Zealand. The imposing String Quartet plays host to a wealth of detail which enriches but never obscures the ‘long\, strong tune’ that threads through the work. Instrumental virtuosity comes to the fore in Kotetetete\, whose title puns on ‘quartet’ and on the Maori word for ‘chattering’.

SUMMARY:Come and Play 4'33''
DESCRIPTION:We’ve invited members of the public to perform side-by-side with the musicians of Red Note Ensemble\, in what we believe might be the first online mass-participation performance of John Cage’s 4’33” on the Friday 3rd July 2020. \nComposed in 1952 for any instrument or combination of instruments\, Cage’s 4’33” requires the performer(s) not to play their instruments throughout the duration of the piece’s three movements. \nWe’ll use Zoom to connect performers from your various remote locations\, live-streaming straight onto our YouTube channel. \nDon’t miss a 49-strong ensemble led by some of Europe’s finest professional musicians re-create this iconic (and still controversial) 20th century classic in a live online performance\, please do come along and be part of the audience on YouTube! \n“We’ve no idea what the audio on Zoom will do with silence\, but that in itself brings the sense of randomness that the piece is about. It’s a bit crazy. It might of course be a total disaster and that’s a valid response too.“. SUMMARY:Red Note Fridays@3: Eddie McGuire's Euphoria
DESCRIPTION:Join us on our YouTube channel every Friday afternoon at 3PM for a session of new music where we release unseen performances\, delve into our recorded albums and meet the composers.  \nFriday 29th May: We take a closer look at Euphoria\, the second track from Eddie McGuire’s ‘Entangled Fortunes’ (Delphian Records). Eddie McGuire is one of Scotland’s greatest living composers. A renaissance man\, his compositional voice is informed by a broad wealth of cultural experience and by an unlimited melodic creativity. In this intensely beautiful and unpretentious music\, folk-like tunes appear naturally\, taking their place in a world of invention large enough to contain minimalist gestures\, intense romanticism\, meditative silence and sudden drama. (click on this link or on BUY TICKETS and you will redirected to YouTube) \nClick here to read the programme notes.

SUMMARY:Leverhulme concert: Eight Songs for a Mad King
DESCRIPTION:Enter the compelling world from which Maxwell-Davies drew his remarkable 8 Songs For A Mad King. \nFounded by King George III in 1817\, the Worshipful Company of Aviarists served to source and look after his tuneful birds and now present this flight of fancy from inside a birdcage of absurdity as the worshipful company create the regal mind of the mad monarch. We’ll sing a song of sixpence with four and twenty blackbirds\, and have a Lark doing it! \nThe score (to a text by Randolph Stow) offers a searing examination of madness\, and this tour de force music theatre piece for male voice and ensemble gives a visceral thrill in performance. \nGeorge\, our mad king\, is suffering from hallucinations and is painfully aware of his failing mental state. During his first episodes of madness\, he is subjected to torture\, starvation\, reproach; he is kept in a stable where he is treated like an animal. \nPerforming alongside Red Note\, in the role of the Mad King\, will be MMus Opera student Oskar McCarthy\, and the piece will be conducted by one of the Leverhulme conducting Fellows. The performance will also feature works by Mark Simpson\, Harrison Birtwistle and two RCS composers\, Sean O’Callaghan and Rylan Gleave. \nMark Simpson Straw Dogs\nHarrison Birtwistle Carmen Arcadiae\nSean O’Callaghan New Work\nRyan Gleave New Work\nInterval \nPeter Maxwell Davies Eight Songs for a Mad King \nRCS Music Lab and Red Note Ensemble \nConductors: Teresa Riveiro Bohm\, Joel Sandelson and Sergej Bolkhovets\nSoloist: Oskar McCarthy \nDirector: Mark Hathaway
