SUMMARY:An Easterhouse Children's Manifesto wins at the Ivor Novellos!
DESCRIPTION:Brian Irvine’s “An Easterhouse Children’s Manifesto” (“A Children’s Guide to Anarchy”)\, written for ensemble and singers\, was named Best Community and Participation Composition. \nThe project was developed throughout 2022 as part of Red Note’s 5 Places Programme\, which targets locations across central Scotland. The result is a collection of seven musical animated video posters\, exploring ideas of personal autonomy\, kindness and human connectivity from a child’s perspective. Co-created with the children of Oakwood Primary School with libretto by John McIlduff\, it was performed by Red Note Ensemble and Oakwood Primary School. \nIn deciding the award\, the judges felt the project to be “a truly immersive experience for the young participants\, beautifully integrating contemporary music” and that “the authentic voices of the children shone throughout\, both in the creation and the performance\, making their contributions feel genuine and integral”. \nJohn Harris\, Red Note Ensemble CEO & Artistic Director said: \n“We are truly thrilled for Brian\, and also for the children of Oakwood Primary and the wider Oakwood community. This project has not only created something that is beautifully simple and profound\, it has demonstrated the wisdom of children and its power to teach us something in return.” \n“Thank you so much to The Ivors Academy for recognising this unique project for the very special work that it is\, and for giving the wonderful children of Oakwood Primary such a memorable moment.” \nVanessa Thomson\, Head Teacher of Oakwood Primary School said the award is a huge thrill for the entire school community. \n“Being awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello Award is such an honour. Our whole school community is thrilled and delighted. I’m sure you could have heard the screams of excitement from Glasgow to London! We have a long and wonderful partnership with all at Red Note and Dumbworld. All our children have revelled in all the experiences we have benefited from by working with professional musicians\, artists which have developed our creativity and connections to the world around us. This particular project meant that children co-created songs which allowed them to show autonomy and views about how to make the world a better place from their perspective.” \n“Bringing the EMC (An Easterhouse Children’s Manifesto) to a wider stage has meant that all the pupils at Oakwood Primary in Easterhouse\, Glasgow have a spotlight on them and their views\, putting Oakwood pupils voice centre stage. Being recognised in this way is a huge boost to every child’s self-esteem\, to their belief in the power of words and children’s voice. The fact that this was achieved in partnership with professionals who share their skills\, craft and time so generously with us has given Oakwood a truly unique insight into the power of the Creative Arts\, supporting ambition and achievement beyond the classroom walls. We are truly grateful for this opportunity.” \nDumbworld\, Creative Production Company said: \n“This award is a testament to the incredible children of Oakwood Primary School who have shared their wisdom\, joy\, and creativity. Their authenticity and insight have been at the heart of this project\, reminding us of the simple yet profound truths that often get lost in the noise of the world. We are deeply grateful to have had the privilege to collaborate with these young voices and witness their boundless talent shine. Congratulations to Brian and all involved.”  \nClare Hewitt\, Music Officer at Creative Scotland said: \n“An Easterhouse Children’s Manifesto is a brilliant example of the creativity that shines through young people in communities throughout Scotland. Together with composer Brian Irvine\, librettist John McIlduff and the musicians of Red Note Ensemble\, the children of Oakwood Primary School have brought their vision of a joyful\, connected and inclusive future to life in an incredibly vibrant way. Their work deserves to be celebrated through this prestigious award.” \nAn installation of “An Easterhouse Children’s Manifesto” was recently displayed at the Glasgow CCA as part of the Nordic Music Days Festival. Both the installation and the award are dedicated to the memory of Dominic Rossa\, an Oakwood Primary School pupil involved in the project. \nRead Our Creative Voice’s case study of “An Easterhouse Children’s Manifesto” and its impact here. \nRed Note Ensemble is supported by Creative Scotland and is a PRS Foundation Talent Development Network Partner supported by PPL. Their support has helped fund this project. \n

SUMMARY:International travel survey for musicians
DESCRIPTION:International touring is a key part of the music industry. It’s great at creating cultural exchange. But it’s also one of the industry’s biggest sources of carbon emissions.  \nHow do we balance these things? We want to hear from musicians directly – how often you travel internationally\, what works for you\, and what doesn’t. What do you want international touring to look like in future? It’ll only take 10 minutes. \nThe Scottish Classical Sustainability Group is made up of 30+ classical music organisations\, but we’re also interested in the experiences of musicians working in other fields – i.e. folk\, jazz\, pop and more. \nThis survey will help us gauge current attitudes to international travel and better understand the challenges preventing the sector from lowering its international travel emissions.  \nTell us your thoughts here: https://forms.gle/EFjSdQ38pBG4WRBRA \nUsing the responses\, the Scottish Classical Sustainability Group will publish a report reflecting the current state of international touring. This will be shared across the industry and with funders. We want to inform how we can maintain international cultural exchange whilst taking better care of the planet.

SUMMARY:OUT NOW! CD Release - Jane Stanley: Cerulean Orbits
DESCRIPTION:This first portrait album dedicated to the music of the Australian-born\, Glasgow-based composer Jane Stanley showcases pieces composed between 2013 and 2023 for different chamber combinations. In addition to some of her favourites among her existing works\, Stanley took the opportunity to develop two new pieces: one for each of the two ensembles involved\, and specially adapted to their particular talents. \nA song cycle for The Hermes Experiment moves Stanley’s music intriguingly towards the tonal\, lyrical sound-world of that group’s two acclaimed recent Delphian albums\, while sharing with the purely instrumental music of the rest of the album – performed by Red Note Ensemble\, also acclaimed Delphian regulars – an audible preoccupation with gesture\, intricately ornamented melodic patterning\, and intertwining woven textures\, balancing decoration with energetic directed motion. \nListen to a preview of the album: https://www.delphianrecords.com/collections/forthcoming/products/jane-stanley-cerulean-orbits \n

SUMMARY:Northern Connection Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Northern Connection is a new and innovative project that aims to connect Nordic countries and Scotland by establishing and strengthening liaisons between composers\, ensembles and festivals in contemporary music. \nOn 7th and 8th of September\, our players will meet with Norwegian composer Tine Surel Lange for a development workshop in preparation of the premiere of a new commissioned work ‘Flaskepost’ at soundfestival in October 2023. \nMore on this soon! \n  \nNorthern Connection fully started in the beginning of 2023. Other countries will join the project in the coming years. The project is initiated and led by Music Finland. \nEach country’s selected commission will be performed by one of the ensembles at a festival in at least one of the partner countries\, and possibly more\, during 2023 and the following years. \n\n\nNorthern Connection is built on the principles of sustainable development and ecological awareness\, and it enables the creation of long-term cooperative relationships between contemporary music professionals in northern countries. The commissioned works will get more than one performance and the ensembles will tour in the partner festivals in an environmentally sustainable way. \nIn this programme\, composers will get new commissions\, ensembles will get new material for their repertoire and festivals will get new programme from the neighbouring countries – which is sustainable and financially wise. New contacts\, ideas and networks will strengthen co-operation and bring additional value to the contemporary art field in the northern area. \n\n“It’s been a pleasure to plan a new type of cooperation with our northern partners. It’s especially gratifying to have Scotland with us in the project. Everyone is excited to join in and inquiries have already come in about when the project will expand and whether we can add more partners to the Northern Connection network\,” says Heli Lampi\, Music Finland’s Head of Communications and Promotion. \n\n\n\nMore information about the project at www.northernconnection.net \nPhoto credit: Tine Surel Lange

SUMMARY:Red Note is looking for board members
DESCRIPTION:Red Note Ensemble is on the look out for new trustees to join its Board. As one of the UK’s most exciting and innovative makers and commissioners of new music\, the role of trustee means you will become part of a vanguard developing new works for the national and international stage\, supporting and developing young composers and musicians and working closely with communities.  \nYou don’t have to love contemporary music to be part of the story\, but you do need to believe that music makes a real difference to the world. \nYou don’t have to have experience of being on a Board\, one of our core areas of focus is developing talent\, and that applies to our trustees too. \nYou don’t need to be based in Scotland\, we value expertise and insight from anywhere. \nWhat you do need\, is enthusiasm\, affinity with Red Note’s ethos and some time to dedicate to quarterly meetings on Zoom\, with some work in between. \nIn return\, you’ll learn new things\, stretch your thinking\, and meet some genuinely lovely folk. \nIf you’ve never considered being on a Board but fancy a chat – get in touch. We’d love to hear from you. If you’ve got oodles of experience and have time to spare\, we’d love to hear from you too. \nIn particular we would welcome hearing from anyone with experience in fundraising\, HR\, financial management or business development. But don’t let that put you off. \nTo find out more about why Red Note Ensemble is so exciting\, and to discover more about what it means to be a Director and Trustee\, please check out Red Note’s website\, the Board Director handbook. \nIf you are interested in finding out more please contact us to arrange a call with Fiona Duncan\, the Chair or one of our Board in the first instance (flduncan2011@gmail.com\, 07917572043).  \nAlternatively please write to us explaining why you are interested in joining the Board of Red Note Ensemble (no more than an A4 page\, single sided) and attach your CV. Please send this to Red Note’s General manager\, Sarah Mills on sarah@rednoteensemble.com. \nThe deadline to submit interest is Thursday 31st August.  \n

SUMMARY:REPORT - Classical Music and Train Travel in Scotland 2022-23
DESCRIPTION:Collated using learning and data from the 30+ members of the SCSG\, the report presents the five key barriers currently preventing greater use of train travel by the Scottish classical music sector. \nThe findings in the report are the results of a survey distributed to all SCSG members\, as well as feedback and learning from over two years of regular meetings. The report highlights the following key barriers preventing greater use of train travel: \n\n1- Timetables\n2- Ticket costs\n3- Travel with large instruments\n4- International connections\n5- Accessibility\n\nIn order to reach government emissions reduction targets\, it is vital that society as a whole finds new ways to travel. The report concludes that by addressing the above challenges\, transport providers\, local authorities and the government can support classical music organisations\, and concurrently audiences and society more widely\, to reduce their travel-related carbon emissions. The report is both a snapshot of the current situation\, and a summary that can be used to influence future planning decisions. \nYou can read the report here: https://www.creativecarbonscotland.com/scsg-train-travel-report/ \n

SUMMARY:CD Release - James Dillon: Tanz/Haus & Emblemata - Carnival
DESCRIPTION:Coming almost a decade and a half after the last CDs devoted to James Dillon’s music\, this twinned pair of digital releases in collaboration with Delphian Records presents two major works written for and premiered by our ensemble in the last six years. \nTanz/haus: triptych 2017 is one of Dillon’s richest recent conceptions: a 45-minute meditation on dance as a form of ‘trembling’\, featuring electric guitar and – as in so much of Dillon’s recent music – a prerecorded electronic track of immense mystery and power. The work secured for Dillon his fifth Royal Philharmonic Society award – an astonishing tally\, unequalled by any living composer.\nListen to the album here: https://orcd.co/james-dillon-tanzhaus \nCarnival\, the first in a projected series of ‘emblem books’\, is a compellingly sustained whole built up from a series of character pieces tailored to the imaginative as well as technical capacities of the Red Note musicians.\nListen to the album here: https://orcd.co/emblemata \n

SUMMARY:'New Normal' Workshops with Soundstreams
DESCRIPTION:Set to premiere in 2022\, New Normal is a collaboration between Soundstreams and Red Note Ensemble. A composer from each organization\, Northern Irish composer Brian Irvine and Ukrainian-Canadian composer Anna Pidgorna\, will work with the other’s ensemble\, creating interleaved works which loosely interact with one another through a series of episodes weaved together through shared\, but misinterpreted\, objects and ideas. It will be a whimsical exploration of social isolation and strange world events which have occurred during the time of global pandemic. \nThis November\, Pidgorna joins Red Note Ensemble in workshops to develop material for New Normal. This work-in-progress imagines a group of highly interdependent and immensely curious aliens exploring the English language and the empty streets of a suburban town under lockdown. Wer hoomun? \nPlease note\, these workshops are not a public performance. \nAnna Pidgorna is a Ukrainian-Canadian composer\, vocalist and multi-media artist who combines sound\, visual arts\, writing and carpentry to create works that are dramatic and picturesque. She works extensively with Ukrainian folk singing\, draws inspiration from the natural soundscape\, and incorporates visual elements into some of her manuscripts. Her work has been commissioned\, performed and recorded by soloists and ensembles in Canada\, USA\, Uruguay\, Ireland\, France\, Germany\, Austria\, Italy\, Greece\, Poland\, Ukraine and South Korea. She holds a PhD from Princeton University\, an MMus from the University of Calgary\, and a BA from Mount Allison University. She lives on the traditional and unceded territory of the Qayqayt First Nation in New Westminster\, BC. \nSoundstreams is one of the world’s leading contemporary music companies\, and the largest global presenter of new Canadian music. Founder and Artistic Director Lawrence Cherney is committed to showcasing the work of Canadian and international composers\, and has commissioned over 170 new works\, and programmed hundreds of unique and compelling concerts including chamber music events\, multi-choir spectaculars\, operas\, music-theatre works\, and seven highly successful international festivals. \nRed Note Ensemble\nRuth Morley\, flute\nWilliam White\, clarinet\nColin Scobie\, violin\nRobert Irvine\, cello\nTom Hunter\, percussion \nJessica Leary Soprano\nEmma Morwood Soprano\nLaura Margaret Smith Mezzo Soprano\nIan Shaw Répétiteur \nNew Normal is a co-production with Soundstreams.
