DESCRIPTION:For ensemble\, improvisers\, conductor & voice\, 13 Vices melts boundaries between theatre\, poetry & contemporary music. Exploring the weird\, humorous\, dark & exotic world of contemporary vices\, it is the creation of pioneering compositional voices –  Brian Irvine & Jennifer Walshe. \nFirst performed in 2015\, the seed was planted many years before when Brian chanced upon sculptures by Mihail Chemiakin in Moscow. The collection of slightly grotesque figures\, each representing a particular adult vice that is damaging to children was the springboard to the project\, which would eventually become\, in Brian’s words\, “a wonderfully messy\, chopped up\, beautiful\, bewitching cocktail of the best people making the best sounds and is a project that myself\, collaborator Jennifer (Walshe) and all the gang and very proud of!”. \n13 Vices is truly some of the most imaginative and exhilarating music around and Red Note Ensemble is delighted to perform alongside Paul Dunmall\, Paul Rogers\, & Mark Sanders. SUMMARY:Red Note at hcmf// 2022
DESCRIPTION:Úna Monaghan is a harper\, composer\, researcher and sound artist from Belfast\, working with experimental and improvised sound\, and with live electronics\, from a traditional Irish music background. Her recent work has combined traditional music with bronze sculpture\, sound art and movement sensors. She has been commissioned by hcmf// and Red Note Ensemble to create a new piece\, Notwithstanding\, that will be premiered at hcmf// 2022. It is for solo harp\, electronics and ensemble. \nIn Ann Cleare’s Dysmorphia II\, the three instruments adopt warped versions of each other as if they are different sides of the same brain\, looking at and interpreting the same world but unable to form a consensus on their vision of it. This is an obsessive\, distorted world in which every compositional parameter is saturated in the idea of dysmorphia – timbral\, harmonic\, formal\, rhythmic\, and dynamic dysmorphia with each parameter frantically searching for the difference between reality and perception. \nNick Roth’s Flocking III\, meanwhile\, explores the mechanisms of an emergent system in which individual components can be perceived to express themselves as a group. SUMMARY:Methil Makes Music
DESCRIPTION:“Methil Makes Music” is a community sharing jointly organised by Levenmouth Academy\, Methilhill Primary School and Red Note Ensemble\, which will be held on Monday 6th February at 6pm at Levenmouth Academy School Hall. \n \nThe performance will feature new compositions from Levenmouth Academy pupils created as part of Red Note’s New Music Makers programme. Over the course of five sessions\, three Red Note musicians and composer Oli Searle have worked with pupils at Levenmouth Academy to explore and create new music. The sharing will showcase the compositions from those pupils. \n \nThe performance will also feature three songs performed by Methilhill Primary Schools P1 and P4 and Red Note Ensemble. Those songs are the result of a long term involvement of Red Note Ensemble with Methilhill Primary School. SUMMARY:Soundfestival 2023 - Northern Connection
DESCRIPTION:For the opening day of soundfestival 2023\, Red Note is premiering ‘Flaskepost‘  a new work by Norwegian composer and interdisciplinary artist Tine Surel Lange. This new work is part of Northern Connection\, a new and innovative project that aims to connect Nordic countries and Scotland by establishing and strengthening liaisons between composers\, ensembles and festivals in contemporary music.\n \n\nFlaskepost — message in a bottle — is inspired by the ocean connecting Scotland and Norway. Based on field recordings made in the Lofoten archipelago in Northern Norway (where Tine is based) the piece is diving into the depths of the ocean\, exploring the musical potential of the ocean itself as well as imagining the creatures and other things you can encounter in the depths. DESCRIPTION:Released in July\, Cerulean Orbits showcases pieces composed by Jane between 2013 and 2023 for different chamber combinations\, and we will be performing some excerpts from her acclaimed work at the University of Glasgow Concert Hall on Friday 18th October. \nAs part of the evening\, Jane will also be sharing a preview of a new self-paced online course to be hosted by Coursera. The 12-week course provides a range of skills and knowledge to learners who have some prior music training to develop their technique and individual identity as composers. It will cover the journey from starting a piece to developing material\, through to preparing scores and parts for performance. DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to perform Tine Surel Lange’s Flaskepost again at soundfestival after premiering it in 2023. \nFlaskepost – meaning message in a bottle – is inspired by the ocean connecting Scotland and Norway. Based on field recordings made in the Lofoten archipelago in Northern Norway (where Tine is based)\, the piece is diving into the depths of the ocean\, exploring the musical potential of the ocean itself as well as imagining the creatures and other things you can encounter in the depths. DESCRIPTION:Continuing our partnership with RCS Composition\,  we’re combining a performance and recording of new works for solo bassoon created by 5 RCS students composers. \nThis project is a collaboration between Red Note and composers from the RCS\, who have been working with Cerys Ambrose Evans over the last few months\, to develop new pieces for solo bassoon. DESCRIPTION:Family-friendly concert\nLocation: St Peter’s Church\, Musselburgh \nTimes: 4 & 5.30pm \nDuration: Approx 30mins\nTickets: £6 | Under 18 free \nFLOCK is a 30 minute small ensemble piece with a strong visual element\, created for children and families of all ages. \nFLOCK is centred around a suite of newly invented playful instruments combined with flute\, cello and percussion. Opening with a sonically and visually captivating performance by the musicians\, the audience are gently encouraged to become more involved until\, through their collective effort\, a chirping flock comes into being. \nFLOCK evolves from explorations of the songs and calls of birds\, the sounds of a woodland and the weather. Origami birds slowly flap their paper wings overhead\, music boxes tinkle\, automated swanee whistles twitch and flutter\, accordion reeds and pipes resonate… creating an evocative and intriguing setting that builds towards the impression of a lively flock of birds tweeting and chattering together. \nRed Note Ensemble\nRuth Morley\, Flute\nMartin Storey\, Cello \nTom Hunter\, Percussion \nKathy Hinde\, Artist  \nFLOCK was created by artist and composer Kathy Hinde and co-commissioned by Red Note Ensemble and sound.
