Noisy Nights

New music, new composers, new ideas

>> 9 May @ The Jam House, Edinburgh

Red Note with ICC

Inventor Composer Coaction (ICC) is a first-of-its-kind event, bringing composers from Edinburgh University together with creators of unique digital musical instruments to explore new sounds and new ways of controlling sound.

Over 30 expert designers from around the world have contributed a variety of instruments, interfaces and sound generators for the

seven resident composers from the University of Edinburgh to work with. These range from 3D-printed spheres that respond to touch, to software modelled on neurons firing inside a human brain. The composers will create chamber works written specifically for their chosen instrument, to be performed by Red Note at a special edition of Noisy Nights at The Jam House, 5 Queen Street, Edinburgh at 8pm on Wednesday 9 May.

For more information, and to watch and listen to examples of the instruments, please visit:

www.inventorcomposer.net

>> 28 May @ Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh

New music in 4/4

Noisy Nights resumes normal service on 28 May, with a Noisy Night for Violin, Cello and Accordion.

What is Noisy Nights? Noisy Nights is fun, free and your chance to listen to (and compose for!) some of the best musicians in Scotland. Noisy Nights is a place to meet music-lovers, curious minds, musicians, composers and artists in an informal space where you can hear some of the best examples of brand new music while having a beer. All sorts of music are welcomed here - as are all sorts of listeners. And, with the now-famous 10 Minute Composer’s Challenge, you get the chance to write your own piece to be played by the ensemble during the interval!

There are two added stipulations for composers submitting their works in response to the call for scores for the event on 28th May:

* All of the music must be written in pop music’s favourite time signature - 4/4

  1. *the music should, ideally (in true pop style) be played to a backing track.

If you are a composer and you’d like to submit a new work, please read the call for scores HERE.

Glasgow-based German artist Torsten Lauschmann explores the limits of communication in an experimental performance-installation for Red Note in the derelict basement space of the Arches.

Taking inspiration from a variety of phenomena, from talking drums and Morse code to the game of Chinese Whispers, this absorbing work looks at the problems and the beauty of misinterpretations, misinformation and misunderstanding.

What can we say about Pass the Spoon, well...

It's a show with actors, music and food.
It's a bit like an opera, but with vegetables and fruit.
It's about cooking.
It's possibly the only show you'll see this year featuring a dung beetle.
Oh, and someone gets eaten. Did we mention that?

Having debuted with three shows at Glasgow's Tramway in November to rave reviews, this spectacular new performance by Edinburgh based theatre production company, Magnetic North, is created by Shrigley with award-winning composer David Fennessy and acclaimed director Nicholas Bone, and features live music played by Red Note!

Pass the Spoon is supported by Creative Scotland with thanks to PRS for Music Foundation and Hope Scott Trust.

“Melancholic, romantic, yet optimistic and somehow thrillingly human, Lauschmann’s work casts unexpected light on the fundamentals.”

Festival Artistic Director Joanna MacGregor bids farewell to Bath International Music Festival with the highly acclaimed, fizzing production of Mozart's joyously extrovert opera, directed by Richard Williams - with Joanna both arranging and conducting Mozart's iconic music in a new adaptation for chamber ensemble.

In the immediate vibrancy of Bath premiere venue Komedia, we recapture the excitement and popularity of Mozart's first performance in Vienna's small Freihaus Theatre in 1791.

With a cast of young international opera singers, the setting is a mythical, modern city and in a super-skyscraper, where the once famous but now reclusive star, The Queen of the Night, has taken refuge. Tamino, the young reporter is out to get a scoop; has Pamina been kidnapped by her father, the multi-media mogul Sarastro, and why are there trials of fire and water for Tamino and Pamina?

This fast-moving, modern dress production has been acclaimed for its clarity, wit and touching sensibility. Highly recommended for all ages, this is true family entertainment with a faultless pedigree, and a delight for both newcomers and opera fans.

Gala Night Champagne Reception: add £12 to the ticket price (numbers limited)

The evening performance on Friday 8 June will be followed by a champagne reception at the venue, 9.30-10.30pm.

For £12 you will receive a glass of champagne and an opportunity to meet the cast of The Magic Flute.

We play a selection of the music from our recent From Reels to Ragas tour of the Western Isles, exploring harmony and counterpoint within a raga, a traditional form of Indian music with a single-line melodic format.

During Indian classical music recitals, the raga scale provides a rigid framework within which the performers can improvise.

In contrast, Western 'modes' and ‘keys’ are usually used for composition, working with musicians in a notational-based context.

Kuljit and Red Note will explore and combine these two worlds without sacrificing the roots of either.
